Donald N. Patten is a native of Newport News, Virginia. He was educated at the University of Richmond where he received a B.A. degree in 1964 and at the University of Virginia where he received a law degree in 1967. In 1968, he joined the law firm of Patten & Wornom (predecessor of Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein, LC.) located in Newport News, Virginia.

For over 50 years, Mr. Patten has represented individuals and businesses in personal injury negligence actions, product liability lawsuits, commercial contract disputes and real estate business matters. For many years the primary focus of his practice has been the representation of victims of asbestos related diseases.  He has represented thousands of injured asbestos plaintiffs in lawsuits filed in a number of states including Virginia, Ohio, Texas and Mississippi. He has argued pretrial motions and complex legal issues in numerous state and federal courts and has deposed hundreds of expert and/or factual witnesses, including medical experts, economists, industrial hygienists, State-of-the-Art witnesses, corporate executives and shipyard workers and has participated in the trial and/or settlement of thousands of asbestos cases. For the last 20 years,  Mr. Patten has represented asbestos claimants in federal bankruptcy proceedings in numerous jurisdictions.  He previously served as a member of the claimants’ committee in the federal bankruptcy reorganizations of Babcock & Wilcox Company, Federal Mogul Corporation and C.E. Thurston & Sons.  He currently serves C. E. Thurston & Sons Asbestos Trust Advisory Committee.   

Mr. Patten is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, the American Board of Trial Advocates, the American Bar Association and the Newport News Bar Association. He is a past president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and has received an “av” rating, the highest rating awarded by Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory for legal competence. Mr. Patten has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Virginia Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He has been selected by his peers to be included in the publication “Best Lawyers in America” from 2001 to 2020 which recognizes the top 5% of practicing lawyers in the United States.  He has also been selected as a super lawyer in the “Super Lawyers” magazine since 2006.

Mr. Patten has long been active in many civic, religious and educational organizations. He previously served the city of Newport News as chairman of the Planning Commission, chairman of the Peninsula Airport Commission, and member of the Newport News City Council where he was Vice Mayor. He served as a trustee of the Mariners Museum and member of the board of the Virginia Living Museum. He was a president of the Christopher Newport University Education Foundation, chairman of Mary Immaculate Hospital and a member of the board of directors of the Peninsula Alliance for Economic Development.  Mr Patten was a long time member of International Cooperating Ministries, an international church building organization.  He is a past member of the Virginia State Council of Higher Education and a member of the board of visitors of the College of William & Mary where he served as Rector. He is a currently vice chairman of the Peninsula Community Foundation and is an emeritus member of the W&M Business School Foundation.  Mr. Patten is a past recipient of the Brotherhood Citation Award from the National Conference of Community and Justice.
