Asbestos and Mesothelioma Today

In 1971, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was created, and in response to epidemic numbers of asbestos disease claims, OSHA formulated safety procedures, warning requirements and mandatory medical examinations for asbestos workers.  Asbestos products continued to be sold and widely used in the United States until the middle or late 1970s, and the OSHA regulations were disobeyed or ignored for many years after they were initially promulgated.  As a result, unprotected asbestos exposure continued throughout much of the 1970s in many industries.

Today, 300,000 asbestos product liability claims have been filed against dozens of asbestos manufacturers as a consequence of a national epidemic of asbestos-related diseases resulting from exposures to asbestos that occurred 20, 30, 40 and even 50 years ago.  For the past 25 years, trial lawyers have uncovered thousands of documents from the files of asbestos manufacturers and suppliers.  These documents clearly show that asbestos companies negligently and recklessly hid what they knew about the dangers and health hazards of asbestos so that workers and users of asbestos products would not object to using these products.  In other words, the asbestos companies considered profits to be more important than people.
