Asbestos Cover Up-Asbestos Company Negligence

The dangers of asbestos, and its link to serious lung diseases was recognized and reported in the early 20th century. This however, did not dissuade asbestos companies from continuing to manufacture the product, placing corporate greed above the well-being of their workers and consumers. By the 1950s, pipe coverers, pipefitters and other construction trade workers were developing asbestos-related diseases. However, the asbestos industry failed to report its dangerous exposure to the public. Then, in the early 1960s, a scientific conference was held in New York City, where Dr. Irving Selikoff explained that those working with or around asbestos were contracting lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Still, the industry did nothing to warn the public. Even today, the asbestos industry claims that chrysotile is a safe form of asbestos, even though the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, OSHA and other organizations consider it a carcinogen.
